Every game is an opportunity to learn and grow, no matter the outcome. This past week, I faced a significant challenge on the mound, taking on the Valley baseball team for the second time in as many weeks. They’re a strong opponent, and it was clear they came prepared, having seen my stuff recently and knowing ahead of time they’d get another chance to face me.
It was a tough outing, to say the least. I only lasted two innings, giving up 8 hits and 9 runs (7 earned). I managed to record 2 strikeouts. On paper, those numbers don’t look great, and it’s easy to get down on yourself when you see a stat line like that. However, after reflecting on the game, I genuinely feel like I pitched well despite the score. What makes me say that? Every single one of the 8 hits I gave up was a single. Even more telling, 7 of those singles were ground balls that found their way through gaps in the infield. I feel great when I’m getting ground balls, but this game felt like every ground ball found a hole. Sometimes, that’s just how baseball goes – the ball finds the gaps, and luck isn’t on your side.
It’s frustrating when you execute pitches and hitters put good swings on them, only for the ball to find eyes. But it’s also a reminder that you can control your effort, your focus, and your execution, but you can’t control where the ball lands. My job is to get outs, and while the results weren’t there this time, I felt confident in the pitches I threw and the way I attacked hitters. I will go back with my coaches to talk about what we could have adjusted so that we can be better prepared for the future.
This game is a valuable learning experience. It reinforces the importance of continuing to work hard, refining my pitches, and trusting my stuff. Every pitcher has days like this, and the true test of character is how you respond. I’m already looking forward to my next opportunity to get back on the mound and compete. The season is far from over, and I’m committed to helping my team finish strong as we head into the post season.
Thanks for following along!
